Germany -- Day 2, Frankfurt

We awoke this morning (25 July 2009) and headed straight out to find some breakfast at a café where I had a really great coffee and custard pastry. After breakfast, Carlos and I walked down the Kaiserstraße and saw some sights before we had to go back to the train station to meet our friend Lina and her husband. I knew Lina from La Selva where she was working on her research with palms and their pollinating insects.

We met up and walked to the Römerberg where we had a snack at a café together and chatted. It was nice catching up with Lina and meeting her husband. After that, Carlos and I continued to walk around downtown seeing the sights of the old town area. I really liked the market square and the cute half-timbered houses encircling the Römerberg. None of these houses were originals (since Frankfurt was heavily bombed in WWII), but they were faithful reconstructions.

From the square, we walked across the Main River on an iron bridge (Eiserner Steg).

Upon returning to the old town area, we visited some Roman ruins in the archaeological garden, then the Frankfurt cathedral (Frankfurter Dom). This gothic cathedral was pretty nice and very pink inside! Although the cathedral itself was not original, some of the artifacts inside were saved from the bombing and are well-preserved. After visiting the cathedral, we wandered aimlessly around the main square and visited a really cool indoor market called Kleinmarkthalle. Inside, we saw lots of delicious fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meats for sale, but we didn’t buy anything -- it was really crowded!

For lunch, we happened upon a good Chinese place in the Hauptbahnhof and took our meals back to the hotel and relaxed for a bit in the afternoon (jet lag was still affecting both of us a little). Later, for dinner, Carlos and I returned to the Hauptbahnhof where I ate the best Italian sandwich that I’ve had in a while for my dinner. We returned to the hotel before dark (to avoid the red light district that surrounds the train station) and turned in for the night -- tomorrow we would leave for Marburg and the ATBC conference!
